Significance of Safety Checks

Safety is primarily the responsibility of the managers on construction sites. However, safety inspectors hired by governments inspect and verify safety standards as per OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).

Construction has the highest fatality rate of any occupation (Construction 2017).

The responsibility of the project manager is to inspect the construction site for safety and quality control.

Managers should have a team that checks the quality of the work and keeps track of safety standards.

Although they won’t visit every site, the government can send safety inspectors to inspect it. If they find safety violations, they can close the project.

The project manager is responsible for ensuring workers are safe and healthy. They also have to manage costs and time.

2. The Safety Checks

Safety checks are performed to prevent any untoward accidents at the site that could lead to a fatality (Construction Site Safety, 2017).

Safety checks will look at any near misses or accidents and make sure that regular inspections are done.

This will ensure that workers and contractors are properly trained to work at heights and understand the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE).

The site manager can incorporate safety into every day conversation by bringing this practice to an account.

They must also make sure safety is included in the project plan.

Non-construction hazards can also lead to fatalities, such as electric shocks. The manager will need to ensure that everyone on the site is aware of these hazards and what steps are taken to address them.

The workers will be more satisfied with their employer’s concern for safety, which can increase the quality and quantity of the job they do.

While safety checks do not prevent death, they help the responsible person identify and reduce hazards.

This inspection report will be used to identify hazards and recommend ways to reduce them.

3.0 Who should conduct safety checks?

As they are more familiar with the workers, the equipment, and the environment, it is best to have supervisors or managers on the safety inspection team.

Before inspecting any area, the inspection team should consult their supervisors and managers. They will discuss the findings with them, make recommendations and document the results.

The report will be kept clear and can be used to remind you to inspect those areas again during your next inspection.

Supervisors will feel the hazards as criticisms of their work approach, but the inspection team can’t ignore them. The team must report any hazards.

Safety checks include inspecting machinery and tools and determining if they are being used at unsafe speeds or in contravention of safe work practices.

In the past, owners were reluctant to take part in safety matters on site due to the possibility of a liability (Sikes Qu & Coble 2000). However, more owners are becoming involved with worker safety, especially if the construction budgets are large.

Construction Site Safety Inspections – 4.0 Frequency

Safety checks should be conducted at the site according to guidelines provided by an authority, such as OSHA.

Depending on the size of the site, routine self-inspection should be conducted monthly.

A complete site inspection every quarter is sufficient if the area is large.

OSHA’s management system requires that the site inspection team includes certain components (Usrey 2012).

These include the inspection checklist, checklist, record and findings, responsibility for abatement, and tracking of hazards.

Site inspections must also include equipment inspections. They should not be confused for one activity because they are distinct inspections.

Safety Inspection Documentation 5.0

A construction safety checklist that is charted by OSHA or a well-documented and reviewed spreadsheet that covers all aspects of site safety inspection should be used.

Although there are many templates online, a certified template is the best.

It is recommended that you use the “Osha Checklist for The Construction Industry”, as it covers all requirements regarding safety and health, occupational health, and inspections of machinery and working instructions (South Carolina Department n.d).

6.0 Construction Site Controlling and Managing Contractor

Because construction on a site requires multiple tasks, a company can’t employ full-time workers and must rely on contractors for the job.

Construction industry is a big believer in contractor chain.

It will be difficult to collaborate them on a project due to differences in their work methods, approaches, companies risks, and cultures.

Safety and health professionals recommend close collaboration between all parties at the site. A proper assessment should be done before hiring contractors, and encouragement should be given to bring in safe contractors. At the contract’s end, documentation of their OSH performance should also be kept.

To ensure compliance with OSH guidelines, it is important to manage contractors (Ustailieva & Starren 2016).

Contractors work on client sites and pose a risk to their health and safety. They are also self-employed workers who have less certifications and training.

Before contractors are allowed to go to a site, they must be fully informed. Clients should also clearly state their safety and health requirements to be followed during construction activities.
