As we saw with Empiricism, Rationalism too would spawn several associated movements. Indeed, out of German Faculty Theorists such as Herbart and Lotze, psychology would be one of those new movements. That said, here we will explore some of its “cousins.”

1) Consider the image below. A scientist tells you that the formula shown is the essence of that shell you picked up on the beach as a souvenir of what had been the best day ever. How would Goethe (or any Romantic) respond? 2) What influences on Freud can you find in Schopenhauer and Nietzsche? 3) Defend the thesis that Kierkegaard would define existentialism as “Never let other people do your thinking for you.” 4) Defend the thesis that Nietzsche’s many bold statements are not intended to be taken literally, but are just a method to provoke you into thinking for yourself.
